Honoring 250 Years of American Independence

In 2026, our nation marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence—a moment that did more than establish a new country. It introduced a bold idea to the world: that liberty, equality, and human dignity are not privileges granted by power, but unalienable rights belonging to all.
As we commemorate this historic milestone, we invite writers, poets, students, elders, and community members to contribute testimonials and original poetry and creative works reflecting on America’s past, present, and future.

This call is inspired by the enduring promise articulated by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who reminded the nation that the founding ideals were a promissory note—one that called America to live up to its words and extend justice and freedom to everyone. Nearly two and a half centuries after the Declaration was signed, that promise continues to challenge, guide, and inspire us.

We invite submissions that explore:
-
What independence and freedom mean today
-
How the ideals of the Declaration of Independence have shaped your life or community
-
The ongoing journey toward equality, justice, and unity
-
Reflections on America’s promise—fulfilled, unfinished, or still unfolding
-
Hopes and visions for the nation’s next 250 years
-
The pursuit of happiness

Submission Types:
-
Testimonials (personal reflections, up to 250 words)
-
Poetry (any style, up to 100 words)
-
Creative Works - Film, Jpgs of Paintings and Other Mixed Media

Selected works may be featured in a commemorative collection, The Hudson Scholar Magazine, a public reading, digital showcase, and / or anniversary event honoring this historic moment - at a date TBD.

As we look back on 250 years of independence, we also look forward—with honesty, courage, and hope—recommitting ourselves to the ideals that began this nation and the promise that calls us still.

Join us in giving voice to America’s story—past, present, and yet to be written.
